Ode to Valentine's Day

Good evening, world.

It's been a long time, yet again. As I said in my last post, "blogging is hard". It's not really the act of it that is difficult; it's the muse that it requires. Today is February 13th. Tomorrow is the 14th... just any other Wednesday... yeah right.

Many people, particularly of the solo sort, simply diminish the importance of St. Valentine's Day. Or, in an attempt to spread cheer to others flying solo (and to their own conscience), they generalize it to say that it is a day of Love, period. You don't have to have a significant other; you can simply enjoy the fact that you love others.

The funny thing about it is that some people actually start to believe that. I don't think anyone truly believes it in its entirety, however. If St. Valentines Day is simply a day to "love everyone", then what is ever other day in the year (mind you, I hold fast to this argument re: the more traditional view of Valentine's Day... what's the matter, can't treat your significant other special on any other day?)?

Deep down inside, you know that there is a little part of you that is itching... an itch only a love can scratch. It may be big, it maybe small... but I'm willing to say we all have it. To love and be loved is one of the greatest achievements man/woman can attain. Nothing else can strike us to our core so well as love.

This is not a post of anger... Nor is it a post of longing. It is merely a post of realization and acceptance. We need to stop kidding ourselves that we can just ignore this day. That's impossible, and even further, unhealthy. Until we truly accept what it is and what it isn't, we can't even know exactly what it is we are ignoring.

I will admit though. This post wasn't brought on by nothing. Tonight was a trying night, emotionally... an excellent predecessor to what is to come tomorrow. I would type out everything that's going on in my mind right now, but I don't think that it's necessary.

Thanks for reading.
